O nome, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Diagrama de Linus Pauling&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, é largamente citado no Brasil, inclusive em livros-texto e em programas para diferentes tipos de concursos públicos e particulares, especialmente na área do ensino médio e vestibulares. Esse nome do diagrama carece completamente de citações internacionais e esta incorreção também foi detalhada pelo professor de Química Ricardo Caçalda&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;http://estadofundamental.wordpress.com/2013/03/15/a-origem-do-diagrama-de-linus-pauling/&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;. Fora incoerências, a homenagem a Linus Pauling é mais do que justa, por sua primordial contribuição ao estudo da natureza da ligação química.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Nesse diagrama, os subníveis são designados por letras: &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;s&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; (&amp;#039;&amp;#039;sharp&amp;#039;&amp;#039; = nítido), &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;p&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; (principal), &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;d&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; (&amp;#039;&amp;#039;diffuse&amp;#039;&amp;#039; = difuso), &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;f&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; (&amp;quot;fine&amp;quot;= com estrutura detalhada). Essa nomenclatura para os subníveis se deve a uma possível correlação desses subníveis com conjuntos de linhas espectrais associadas a um átomo. A correlação é inconsequente, mas o nome continuou a ser usado, referindo-se, inclusive, aos orbitais &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;s, p, d, f&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
